Anticipating his first meeting with Monroe to discuss strengthening trade ties between the two countries, Cathalan lists American products in demand in France and French products available for export, with some current prices. He also suggests ways for their ships to avoid capture by the coalition at war with France and the Algerian pirates at war with the United States.

James Monroe, fifth president of the United States of America (b. April 28, 1758, Monroe Hall, Virginia-d.
